NOTHING BUT THE BLOOD

NOTHING BUT THE BLOOD

Hebrews 9: 22 (Concept)

by Rev. Richard Jones

Hebrews 9:22 (ESV)
22  Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

THE PAST
 Genesis 2:15-16 (ESV)

15  The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.
16  And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden,

Genesis 3:6-7 (ESV)
6  So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7  Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

Genesis 3:21 (ESV)
21  And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.

THE PASSOVER
Exodus 12:1-13 (ESV)

1  The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt,
2  “This month shall be for you the beginning of months. It shall be the first month of the year for you.
3  Tell all the congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month every man shall take a lamb according to their fathers’ houses, a lamb for a household. 4  And if the household is too small for a lamb, then he and his nearest neighbor shall take according to the number of persons; according to what each can eat you shall make your count for the lamb. 5  Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male a year old. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats, 6  and you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, when the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill their lambs at twilight. 7  “Then they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. 8  They shall eat the flesh that night, roasted on the fire; with unleavened bread and bitter herbs they shall eat it. 9  Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted, its head with its legs and its inner parts. 10  And you shall let none of it remain until the morning; anything that remains until the morning you shall burn. 11  In this manner you shall eat it: with your belt fastened, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. And you shall eat it in haste. It is the LORD’s Passover. 12  For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the LORD.
13  The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.

THE PRACTICE
Leviticus 4:27-31 (ESV)

27  “If anyone of the common people sins unintentionally in doing any one of the things that by the LORD’s commandments ought not to be done, and realizes his guilt, 28  or the sin which he has committed is made known to him, he shall bring for his offering a goat, a female without blemish, for his sin which he has committed. 29  And he shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and kill the sin offering in the place of burnt offering. 30  And the priest shall take some of its blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out all the rest of its blood at the base of the altar.
31  And all its fat he shall remove, as the fat is removed from the peace offerings, and the priest shall burn it on the altar for a pleasing aroma to the LORD. And the priest shall make atonement for him, and he shall be forgiven.

THE PRINCIPLE
Leviticus 17:11 (ESV)

11  For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life.

THE PROVISION
Leviticus 16:5-10 (ESV)

5  And he shall take from the congregation of the people of Israel two male goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering.
6  “Aaron shall offer the bull as a sin offering for himself and shall make atonement for himself and for his house. 7  Then he shall take the two goats and set them before the LORD at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 8  And Aaron shall cast lots over the two goats, one lot for the LORD and the other lot for Azazel. 9  And Aaron shall present the goat on which the lot fell for the LORD and use it as a sin offering, 10  but the goat on which the lot fell for Azazel shall be presented alive before the LORD to make atonement over it, that it may be sent away into the wilderness to Azazel.

Leviticus 16:15-17 (ESV)
15  “Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering that is for the people and bring its blood inside the veil and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull, sprinkling it over the mercy seat and in front of the mercy seat. 16  Thus he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleannesses of the people of Israel and because of their transgressions, all their sins. And so he shall do for the tent of meeting, which dwells with them in the midst of their uncleannesses. 17  No one may be in the tent of meeting from the time he enters to make atonement in the Holy Place until he comes out and has made atonement for himself and for his house and for all the assembly of Israel.

Leviticus 16:20-22 (ESV)
20  “And when he has made an end of atoning for the Holy Place and the tent of meeting and the altar, he shall present the live goat. 21  And Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over it all the iniquities of the people of Israel, and all their transgressions, all their sins. And he shall put them on the head of the goat and send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a man who is in readiness.
22  The goat shall bear all their iniquities on itself to a remote area, and he shall let the goat go free in the wilderness.

THE PROMISE
Hebrews 10:11-14 (ESV)

11  And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12  But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13  waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14  For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

1 Peter 1:18-19 (ESV)
18  knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold,
19  but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
