FIVE CHRISTIAN CERTAINTIES

1 John 5: 13-21

1 John 5:13-21 (ESV)
13  I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life. 14  And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15  And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him. 16  If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life—to those who commit sins that do not lead to death. There is sin that leads to death; I do not say that one should pray for that. 17  All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death. 18  We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him. 19  We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. 20  And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. 21  Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

THE CERTAINTY OF SALVATION                                                                                        1 John 5:13 (ESV)
13  I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.

John 20:30-31 (ESV)
30  Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book;
31  but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Romans 10:9-13 (ESV)
9  because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10  For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11  For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12  For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13  For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

John 17:1-3 (ESV)
1  When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, 2  since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3  And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

THE CERTAINTY OF ANSWERED PRAYER
1 John 5:14-17 (ESV)

14  And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.
15  And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him. 16  If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life—to those who commit sins that do not lead to death. There is sin that leads to death; I do not say that one should pray for that. 17  All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death.

John 15:7 (ESV)
7  If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

Psalm 66:18 (ESV)
18  If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.

1 John 3:21-22 (ESV)
21  Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God;
22  and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.

1 Corinthians 11:27-30 (ESV)
27  Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. 28  Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
29  For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30  That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died.

Hebrews 6:4-9 (ESV)
4  For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5  and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6  and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt. 7  For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. 8  But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned. 9  Though we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things—things that belong to salvation.

THE CERTAINTY OF VICTORY OVER SIN AND SATAN
 1 John 5:18 (ESV)
18  We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.

Romans 6:17-18 (ESV)
17  But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed,
18  and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.

THE CERTAINTY OF BELONGING TO GOD
 1 John 5:19 (ESV)
19  We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

Revelation 3:20 (ESV)
20  Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.

THE CERTAINTY OF CHRIST BEING THE TRUE GOD
 1 John 5:20-21 (ESV)
20  And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
21  Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
