The Holy Spirit as the Revealer

1 Corinthians 2:10-16

1 Corinthians 2:10-16 (NKJV)
10  But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.
11  For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.
12  Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.
13  These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
14  But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
15  But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one.
16  For “who has known the mind of the LORD that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

I. The Competence of the Revealing Spirit

  • He is competent to reveal to us the things of God.
  • There is nothing in God that is hid from Him.
  • The nature of the Almighty is in the Holy Spirit’s eye.
  • The perfection of the Almighty is in His eye.
  • The purpose of the Almighty is patient. (patient/calm)
  • Who among man knows the things of man? (Holy Spirit does)
  • Man cannot observe the hidden motive.
  • Man cannot observe the secret desire.
  • Man sees only what is without.
  • But to the Spirit, all that inner region is unveiled.
  • We can see a little of God’s working in the universe, and we can gather something of His mind.
  • We cannot by searching find Him out, but the Spirit of God knows the things of God.
  • The fitness of the Spirit to be our instructor in the things of God is manifest (able to be seen).
  • He is the only Teacher.

II. The Work of the Revealing Spirit

  • The all-knowing Spirit from God is imparted to believers in teaching us to know the things of God.
  • The things prepared for them that love God are the free gifts of His Grace.
  • They are provided to us without money but are free gifts of His Grace.
  • We have the greatest Teacher in the Holy Spirit.
  • The way to spiritual knowledge is through faith and personal experience.

III. The Necessity for the Revealing Spirit

  • Drawn between the natural man and the spiritual man.
  • The natural man has the fallen condition which sin has brought mankind. This type of man is earthly.
  • The spiritual man is one who discerns the things of God and is wakened into life by the Spirit of God.
  • This spirit dwelt by the Holy Spirit becomes the ruling part of his nature…thought, desire, purpose, passion.
  • The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God. They are foolish to him. He fails to understand them.
  •  The natural man is doomed to know the spiritual things…a blind man cannot judge color.
  • The spiritual man judges all things.
  • The joy of salvation is only appreciated by the renewed man. His inner eye has been opened and he now lives and moves in the path of spiritual things, where natural man stumbles and falls.
  • Every believer is called to exercise his own judgement.

Paul’s argument is that no one can understand God. No one can fully comprehend His plans, His feelings, His views, his designs. No one by nature, under the influence od sense and passion, is disposed to investigate His truth or loves them when they are revealed.

The Christian is influenced by God. He has His Spirit. He has the mind of Christ, who had the mind of God. He sympathizes with Christ. He has His feelings, desires, purposes and plans. We are influenced by His Spirit.
